Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children, youth, and families in Canada

Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

COVID-19 required a full-scale redeployment of public health resources away from routine public health activities. One particularly dangerous side-effect of this deployment is the backlog associated with missed routine childhood and school-based immunizations. This project aims to explicate the effect of COVID-19 on these vital programs deeply in three case study provinces, to understand innovations in catch-up efforts across Canada, and to project what the impact might be in terms of disease burden into the future with inadequate catch-up efforts.

Program Activities

Our 2023 activities include:

  1. Development and deployment of finalized survey to assess program innovations to UPHN members across the country; We have reached representation from five provinces and continuing to recruit.
  2. We have received 2 of 3 case study reports (Alberta; Quebec) and; one is in the data collection phase (Saskatchewan); and,
  3. The University Hospital Network in Toronto has conducted modelling on cervical cancer burden if HPV immunizations are not caught-up.
