In 2004 the Medical Officers of Health of Canada’s largest cities held a founding meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta to focus on public health issues common to large urban centres in Canada and to determine actions they could take collectively to resolve the issues.  UPHN now includes 24 urban centres and continues to address public health issues unique to urban settings.

Approximately half of Canada’s population lives in the areas represented by the UPHN members.
